Natural Gas and LNG: Latest Prices, Exports and Supply News

ATN Breaking News |

U.S. Prices: Bearish but Watching

U.S. Henry Hub natural gas fell to $2.98 per MMBtu on October 1, 2026, down 1.55% on the day. Inflation-adjusted Henry Hub averaged $2.93 per MMBtu from June through August 2026 — 6% lower year-over-year — as record production and ample inventories kept a lid on prices. However, traders are watching the LNG export arbitrage closely: October natural gas futures rolled off the board at $3 as Mountaineer XPress pipeline flows returned, while energy executives forecast higher prices amid Iran war unease.

Europe: Storage Dangerously Low

As of October 1, EU gas storage sites were only 71% full, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe — compared to 86% for this time of year over the past five years. Germany's storage was even lower at around 58%, raising serious supply security concerns ahead of winter. JERA, Japan's biggest LNG importer, warned on October 2 that it does not expect Qatari supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz to resolve in time for winter, with Asian spot and European benchmark prices at their highest since the 2022–2023 crisis.

Qatar: Force Majeure Extended Again

State-owned QatarEnergy extended force majeure on LNG deliveries to Asia and Europe by another month through the end of November, as LNG cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely blocked. Qatar accounts for about 20% of global LNG exports, all of which transit the strait.

Canada: Phase 2 Decision Imminent

Partners in the Shell-led LNG Canada project — backed by Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corp and Korea Gas Corp — could reach a final investment decision on a Phase 2 expansion as early as this month. The expansion would add 14 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of capacity at Kitimat, British Columbia, effectively doubling total output to 28 mtpa.

Pakistan: Regulatory Change

Pakistan's Energy Ministry has proposed easing existing regulations to allow private companies to directly import LNG on spot markets — a role currently reserved for state-owned Pakistan LNG Ltd. The proposal follows Iran-related supply disruptions that have forced Pakistan to pay steep premiums for spot cargoes since Qatar declared force majeure on its term contracts.

What This Means

The global LNG market is in structural deficit heading into winter. Qatar's prolonged force majeure — now extended through November — removes roughly 20% of global LNG supply from reliable channels. Europe enters winter at storage levels well below the five-year average, meaning any cold snap will drive sharp TTF price spikes that ripple into Asian spot markets. For importers and traders, the Canada Phase 2 decision is the single most important supply development to watch this week — if approved, it signals 14 mtpa of Pacific-facing export capacity for Asian buyers seeking non-Hormuz supply routes. Pakistan's proposed deregulation of LNG imports could open a new, price-sensitive buyer entering the spot market at a time when supply is already tight — a bearish signal for anyone hoping demand eases.
