Reshoring and New Factories: Latest Plant Announcements in North America

Reshoring and New Factories: Latest Plant Announcements in North America

ATN Breaking News |

The Scale of the Moment

As of September 28, 2026, IndustrialSage is tracking $2.084 trillion in announced private-sector U.S. manufacturing investments since 2025, spanning 251 companies across 43 states and Puerto Rico. September alone produced a wave of billion-dollar commitments across pharma, electrical infrastructure, automotive, and food manufacturing — a pattern driven by tariffs, supply chain security concerns, and AI-related infrastructure demand.

Pharma: The Biggest Story

Eli Lilly broke ground on September 22 on a $6.5 billion active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility at Generation Park in Northeast Houston, Texas — the largest API project in Texas history. The plant will produce Foundayo (orforglipron), Lilly's oral GLP-1 medicine, and is expected to create approximately 4,000 construction jobs and more than 600 permanent high-wage positions. It is Lilly's fifth U.S. API site and tenth domestic manufacturing facility announced since 2020, all part of a broader $50 billion reshoring commitment. Separately, Reckitt announced on September 17 up to $600 million to expand its Wilson, North Carolina over-the-counter manufacturing facility — doubling its earlier commitment — to produce more than 80% of its Mucinex products domestically by the time the plant opens in H1 2027.

Electrical Infrastructure: Three Major Wins

September saw three separate billion-dollar-scale investments in electrical manufacturing. Hitachi Energy announced a $528 million transformer factory in Gallman, Mississippi — its largest-ever U.S. investment — on September 15, targeting grid infrastructure for AI data centers. Eaton committed $242 million on September 2 to a new 1-million-square-foot electrical enclosure facility in North Little Rock, Arkansas, creating 1,200 jobs. Okonite Company announced a $400 million high-voltage cable plant in Orangeburg, South Carolina on September 22.

Automotive: Louisville Gets Two $1 Billion Investments

GE Appliances announced a $1 billion expansion at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky on September 2, reshoring dryer production from Mexico and securing 4,700 existing jobs. Ford announced a separate $1 billion investment at its Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville on September 11 — a new paint shop at the company's highest-revenue U.S. facility. Pirelli announced on September 22 a $1.2 billion expansion of its Rome, Georgia tire campus, scaling production to 6 million tires annually and creating approximately 1,000 new jobs.

Regulatory Context

The reshoring wave is being directly shaped by U.S. tariff policy. Hansae Mobility's $93.2 million Michigan plant — announced September 15 — explicitly cited insourcing production "currently performed by Korean suppliers" as a primary driver. Suniva completed an $835 million capital raise on September 8 to build a second U.S. solar cell facility in South Carolina, underpinned by domestic content incentives supporting the clean energy supply chain.

What This Means

For importers and traders, this investment wave signals a structural shift in North American sourcing — electrical components, pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, and solar cells are all moving toward domestic production at scale. For exporters to the U.S., the window for certain categories is narrowing as domestic capacity comes online between 2027 and 2029. For investors, the concentration of projects in electrical infrastructure — driven by AI data center demand — is the theme with the most immediate momentum and the clearest demand signal.
