Bitcoin and Ethereum Price Update: What Is Driving the Market

October 13, 2026 | ATN Trade & Finance

Crypto opened sharply lower Monday as Asian equity markets sold off, then staged a partial recovery driven by spot buyers — a session that ended with Bitcoin nearly flat on the day and Ethereum still modestly in the red.

Where Prices Stand

Bitcoin opened at $81,754, down 2.3% from Sunday's close, before rebounding to approximately $83,310 by midday ET — a gain of roughly 0.77% on the session. Ethereum opened at $2,444, off 3.6%, and recovered to around $2,500 by midday, still down about 1.15% on the day. The intraday bounce was described by analyst Ted Pillows as a "V-shaped recovery in $BTC with strong spot demand" — notably, the rebound was led by direct spot purchases rather than leveraged positions or ETF flows.

Zooming Out: Still Well Off the Highs

The weekly picture is softer. Bitcoin's opening price was down 4.7% from a week earlier and Ethereum's was down 9.8% — a meaningful divergence that reflects continuing rotation out of ETH-denominated positions. Year-over-year, Bitcoin is off 29% from its all-time high of $128,198, reached October 6, 2025. Ethereum is down 41.3% from its August 2025 peak of $4,953. Bitcoin ETFs reported approximately $679 million in net weekly outflows, consistent with institutional caution ahead of the US CPI report due Tuesday.

What Is Driving the Market

Three forces are shaping crypto prices this week. First, macro risk-off: the same Asian stock selloff and semiconductor selloff that weighed on US equities hit crypto in overnight trading before spot buyers absorbed the dip. Second, the US CPI print due Tuesday is the next macro catalyst — a hotter-than-expected number could push Treasury yields above 5.3% and renew dollar strength, both headwinds for crypto. Third, the US-China trade truce extension to January 10, 2027 is a background positive for risk assets broadly, including digital assets.

ETH vs. BTC

Ethereum's underperformance relative to Bitcoin — down nearly 10% on the week versus Bitcoin's 4.7% — continues a trend that has run for most of 2026. Bitcoin's narrative as a macro reserve asset has held better in the high-rate environment. Ethereum has faced headwinds from slowing DeFi activity and continued competition from Solana in the smart contract layer.

What this means for investors: Bitcoin has found support around the $80,000–83,000 range on spot buying, but ETF outflows and the CPI overhang make a clean breakout unlikely this week. Ethereum's relative weakness is the more important signal — until ETH/BTC stabilizes, the altcoin rotation thesis remains challenged.
