Bitcoin and Ethereum Price Update: What Is Driving the Market
October 20, 2026 | ATN Trade & Finance
Both major cryptocurrencies are sliding Tuesday as oil-driven inflation fears, a 5.15% 10-year yield, and two consecutive weeks of spot ETF outflows keep institutional demand soft. A large Monday inflow into BlackRock's IBIT offers one counter-signal.
Where Prices Stand
Bitcoin was trading near $81,405–81,730 as of Tuesday morning, down approximately 1.2–1.3% on the day. On a weekly basis BTC is roughly flat (-0.1%), down 0.8% for the month, and 24.7% below where it traded a year ago. Ethereum was at approximately $2,384–2,394, off 1.5–1.6% on the day and 1.6% on the week. ETH has fared worse over longer windows: it is down 8.6% for the month and 39.6% year-over-year.
What Is Weighing on Prices
Three macro forces are converging against crypto right now. First, September CPI printed 3.7% — a tenth above the 3.6% forecast — reducing the probability of Fed rate cuts and increasing the relative attractiveness of the 5.15% 10-year Treasury yield versus zero-yield digital assets. The Fed meets October 27–28, and markets are pricing a hold with elevated odds of a December hike. Second, Hormuz-driven oil prices — Brent touched $111 Tuesday as Houthi drone attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure intensified — are amplifying inflation expectations and suppressing risk appetite across asset classes. Third, derivatives markets reflect skew toward the downside: the 25-delta options skew rose, meaning traders are paying more for downside puts relative to calls — a positioning signal that aligns with the broader defensive rotation in equities.
On-chain, perpetual futures traders drove most of last week's selling. Transaction fees and transfer volumes each dropped roughly 10%, while ETF trading volume fell below its usual range, according to Glassnode data from October 19.
ETF Flows: Two Weeks of Outflows, One Day of Reversal
US spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $681.1 million in the week ending October 10 and an additional $228.6 million in the week ending October 17 — two consecutive negative weeks that put October's month-to-date total in the red at approximately -$90.6 million through Tuesday. The largest single-fund outflow was Fidelity's FBTC at -$380.3 million in the October 10 week, with BlackRock's IBIT shedding $165.4 million in the October 17 week.
Monday provided an important counter-signal: IBIT recorded a single-day inflow of $665.2 million on October 19, making it the largest single-day US Bitcoin ETF inflow of the month by a wide margin and pushing the partial week's net total to +$526.6 million. Whether that represents a durable floor or a one-day bounce before the October 28 Fed decision remains to be seen.
Ethereum: JPMorgan Integration, Persistent ETF Pressure
ETH received a notable institutional signal Monday when JPMorgan expanded its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum's public mainnet, giving eligible institutional clients the ability to make blockchain-based dollar transfers and settlements on a public network. ETH gained more than 1% on the news and volume rose 42% in the session. Treasury firm BitMine added 12,535 ETH last week, lifting its holdings past 6.041 million ETH. Despite both developments, spot Ethereum ETFs have posted consecutive outflow sessions, and ETH remains below its 20-day EMA (~$2,504) and 50-day EMA (~$2,483), maintaining a cautious near-term technical structure. Key support sits at $2,355 and the 100-day EMA near $2,351; a breach of that zone would bring $2,000 into view for analysts tracking the range.
What this means: The crypto market is pricing a macro environment where the Fed cannot cut, oil cannot fall, and risk assets face a high real yield hurdle. The IBIT inflow surge on Monday is a genuine data point — it suggests large buyers are treating the $81,000–$82,000 range as a potential floor for BTC — but one session does not reverse two weeks of institutional selling. The October 28 Fed statement is the clearest near-term catalyst in either direction.
