Top Losers: The Biggest Stock Declines in North America and Why
October 21, 2026 | ATN Trade & Finance
Wednesday's broad market advance masked meaningful damage in a handful of names. Netflix, AT&T, Intuitive Surgical, and Apple each fell on earnings disappointments, competitive threats, or analyst downgrades — and consumer staples names gave back gains as investors rotated out of defensives.
Netflix: The Ad Tier Isn't Growing Fast Enough
Netflix was the day's most prominent casualty, falling 4–6% after reporting Q3 results the previous evening. On the surface, the numbers were reasonable: revenue of $12.87 billion (+12% year-over-year) and EPS of $0.87 versus a $0.82 estimate. But the forward guidance was the problem. Q4 EPS guidance came in at $0.67 against a $0.73 consensus estimate, Q4 net income was guided to $2.79 billion versus expectations of $3.07 billion, and the company trimmed its full-year advertising revenue target to approximately $2.7 billion from a prior goal near $3 billion. Management acknowledged that ad-supported tier features rolled out more slowly than planned. The revenue growth of 12% was Netflix's slowest in roughly three years — investors had priced in acceleration, and the stock has now fallen more than 40% over the past year.
AT&T: Earnings Mixed, SpaceX Threat Growing
AT&T dropped approximately 6% after a Q3 report that landed against a difficult competitive backdrop. Consensus had expected adjusted EPS near $0.60 on revenue of roughly $31.6 billion. The report itself was mixed, but what weighed more heavily was the SpaceX factor: on October 9, SpaceX acquired spectrum assets from Grain Management — 800 MHz licenses covering rural and suburban markets — with FCC approval pending. Bernstein downgraded AT&T to Market Perform on October 12 with a $24 price target, explicitly citing SpaceX's expanding satellite-based mobile and broadband capabilities as a structural threat to AT&T's subscriber base. CFO Pascal Desroches also announced his retirement effective December 31, adding a management transition overhang.
Intuitive Surgical: Beat the Numbers, Missed the Narrative
Intuitive Surgical reported Q3 results that beat on both earnings and revenue — but the stock fell approximately 11% on procedure growth that fell short of expectations. US da Vinci procedure volume grew 12% year-over-year in Q3, down from a 14% pace in Q1. Management attributed the slowdown to patients deferring elective procedures following changes to Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, which reduced coverage for some patients. For a stock priced at a premium on durable procedure volume growth, the sequential deceleration was enough to trigger a significant selloff despite the earnings beat.
Apple: Downgrades Stack Up on iPhone Demand
Apple fell on a Loop Capital downgrade to Hold with a $330 price target, the latest in a series of analyst actions citing weak iPhone demand. The AI-driven upgrade cycle that had been expected to accelerate hardware refresh has not materialized at the pace Wall Street anticipated, and the stock remains under multiple overhangs heading into its own Q3 earnings release.
Consumer Staples: Rotation Pressure
Clorox, Conagra, and General Mills each fell 1–3% as the day's rally drew capital out of defensives and back into technology and industrials. The moves reflected sector rotation rather than company-specific news — but the direction was consistent with a market that, for now, is rewarding earnings beats in cyclicals over defensive income.
What this means: Wednesday's losers share a theme: guidance misses hit harder than earnings beats help. Netflix and Intuitive Surgical both beat the current quarter but guided soft; AT&T beat a weak bar but faces a structural competitive narrative that the market is pricing in now rather than waiting for subscriber data. With the bulk of S&P 500 earnings still ahead, these sessions are a reminder that the market is less forgiving of forward uncertainty than backward beats.
