Bitcoin and Ethereum Price Update: What Is Driving the Market

October 27, 2026 | ATN Trade & Finance

Bitcoin spent most of Tuesday trading just below the psychologically significant $80,000 threshold before recovering toward session highs as equities closed stronger. Ethereum held the $2,300s but remains in a seven-day downtrend. The day's price action was shaped by a specific set of forces: pre-FOMC caution, a wave of capital moving toward AI equities rather than crypto, mixed institutional buying signals, and a Glassnode report showing whale positioning turning bearish for the first time since June. Here is where prices stand and what is driving the market.

Where Prices Are

Bitcoin opened the day around $79,756 and dipped to an intraday low near $79,421 in the morning before recovering. By late afternoon it had climbed back above $80,676, the top of the day's range. On a seven-day basis, Bitcoin is down approximately 2.1–3%, and down roughly 5.4% over the past month. The all-time high remains $126,198, reached on October 6, 2025 — nearly a year ago. Total Bitcoin market capitalization is approximately $1.6 trillion. Resistance levels traders are watching sit at $80,500–$80,800, with $82,000 cited as the level that would signal a more durable stabilization; support below lies at $79,000, then $78,500, and deeper at $77,500–$77,700.

Ethereum traded in a tighter range, ending the day near $2,312–$2,345 depending on the session period measured. That puts it down approximately 3.7% over seven days. Analysts are watching $2,290–$2,300 as the key near-term support band; a break below that zone would be a negative technical signal. XRP gained +2.3% to around $1.30–$1.32. Solana held near $100–$101, essentially flat. Hyperliquid's HYPE token rose +5.15%. The total crypto market capitalization is approximately $2.67 trillion, down about 0.7% over the 24-hour period as of midday.

The Fed Is the Room's Elephant

The Federal Reserve begins its two-day meeting today, with the rate decision scheduled for Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by a press conference from Chair Kevin Warsh. CME FedWatch data shows approximately 90–91% probability of a hold at the current 3.75%–4.00% target range. That expectation is well-priced — it is not a surprise. What markets are watching is the press conference for any signal about December, where a hike remains a live possibility given September CPI at 3.7% and a three-month annualized core rate running at 3.4%. Crypto has historically struggled in the week before a Fed decision, and Tuesday's trading fit that pattern: contained selling pressure, limited directional conviction, and a market waiting to hear Warsh's tone on the path forward.

AI Capital Is Competing for the Same Dollars

One of the day's clearest narratives was the competitive pull of AI equities. Anthropic's S-1 filing — targeting a ~$2 trillion valuation for a Nasdaq IPO under the ticker "ANT" — drew institutional attention toward the AI sector at a moment when crypto was already consolidating. Meta's announcement of a $95 billion AI infrastructure raise added to that signal. CoinDesk's live market blog captured the dynamic directly: "Bitcoin holds below $80,000 as AI buildout draws more capital." This is not a new tension — crypto and AI have competed for speculative capital throughout 2025 and 2026 — but the Anthropic filing made the competition concrete. Galaxy Research's Alex Thorn pushed back, arguing that Bitcoin is in an accumulation zone and the bear market is over; Galaxy Digital's stock (GLXY) rose +9.57% on that view.

Institutional Buying: Split Signals

Corporate treasury activity sent mixed signals. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the largest public Bitcoin holder at 848,517 BTC, reported no purchases for the week ending October 25 — ending a streak of consistent weekly buys. The company has been redirecting funds toward preferred-stock repurchases. One week without buying does not mark a strategic shift, but it matters to a market that has treated Strategy as a consistent bid under the price.

Strive Asset Management moved in the opposite direction. CEO Matt Cole's firm added 6,182 BTC between October 17 and 23 at a cost of approximately $511 million, bringing total holdings to approximately 43,000 BTC — currently the fourth-largest public Bitcoin treasury. To pass Metaplanet (44,000 BTC) and claim the second-largest position behind Strategy, Strive would need to add about 105 BTC per week. The company also filed an up-to-$1 billion at-the-market offering of SATS preferred stock, proceeds of which may fund additional Bitcoin purchases.

Separately, blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged a wallet linked to MARA Holdings moving approximately 1,000 BTC (roughly $81 million) to Galaxy Digital — a transfer that sparked speculation about an open-market sale, though a transfer to a trading desk does not confirm one.

ETF Flows Return to Positive — Barely

US spot Bitcoin ETF flows turned positive on October 26 after two consecutive sessions of net redemptions. The total net inflow was $110.34 million, driven entirely by BlackRock's IBIT, the only fund among the 12 US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs to see net purchases on the day. That follows a rough October 22 session that saw $635.6 million in outflows across the category. The return to positive flows is encouraging but too narrow to characterize as a conviction-driven move back in.

Ethereum: A Bug Patched, and a Caution from Developers

On the technical side, Ethereum developers merged a fix on October 26 for a vulnerability discovered in Glamsterdam — the network's next major upgrade, which combines Amsterdam execution-layer changes and Gloas consensus changes. The bug involved how staking validator deposits were processed during the upgrade: under specific conditions involving block builders, a staking operator could have redirected a liquid staking protocol's validator deposits into a builder balance the operator controlled, allowing withdrawal of funds that were not theirs. The fix was merged by maintainer Justin Traglia, separating builder and validator deposits by withdrawal credentials. Client teams still need to implement and test the revised behavior. Glamsterdam's Hoodi testnet activation was also postponed on October 22 over a separate compatibility issue. No mainnet date has been confirmed.

What this means: Bitcoin at $79,000–$81,000 is a market in search of its next catalyst. The pre-FOMC holding pattern is rational — no one knows what Warsh will signal about December, and that uncertainty is worth waiting through. The more durable question is the AI capital competition: every dollar of institutional money flowing into Anthropic's IPO or AI infrastructure stocks is a dollar that is not buying bitcoin. That rotation dynamic is not going away as long as the Nasdaq is making new highs on AI earnings. The bullish case — advanced by Galaxy and Strive's continued accumulation — rests on the view that this is a consolidation before a move higher, not the beginning of a deeper correction. The Glassnode whale data, showing net short positioning for the first time since June, argues for caution on that view. Wednesday's Fed decision will clear one piece of the fog; the GDP and PCE data due Thursday will clear another.
