Top Losers: The Biggest Stock Declines in North America and Why
October 19, 2026 | ATN Trade & Finance
The week of October 13–16 produced some of the sharpest single-stock drops of the year, concentrated in two overlapping themes: AI infrastructure financing stress and a Chinese memory chip threat that blindsided the semiconductor sector.
CoreWeave (CRWV): Down ~25% on the Week
The biggest story of the week was CoreWeave (CRWV), which lost roughly 25% over the five sessions and closed Friday at $61.39 — down another 11.91% on October 16 alone. The trigger was a focus on the company's balance sheet: CoreWeave carries approximately $35 billion in debt plus substantial lease liabilities against a Q2 net loss of $626 million on revenue of $2.575 billion. Yields on its 2031 bonds spiked above 16% in secondary trading — a clear signal that credit markets are repricing the risk of AI infrastructure buildout. Insider selling added to the pressure: Chief Revenue Officer Jon Jones sold shares on October 13, part of a pattern of insider activity in recent weeks. CEO Michael Intrator defended the company, citing a $104 billion contracted backlog, but markets focused on the gap between cash on hand and obligations.
Nebius (NBIS): Down ~25% on Contagion
Nebius (NBIS), a European AI cloud competitor, fell approximately 25% on the week and dropped 12.18% on Friday alone as CoreWeave's debt concerns spread across the neocloud sector. Goldman Sachs, in a note released October 16, confirmed that spreads on US dollar high-yield AI-related debt had widened 25 basis points in a single day (October 13–14) to 360 basis points over Treasurys — a new high — while non-AI high-yield spreads barely moved. Goldman strategist Amanda Lynam called AI corporate bonds from neoclouds "at the epicenter of the funding cost debate." A Gartner forecast that more than 80% of neocloud providers may not operate independently by 2030, and a projection of more than $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure impairments, amplified investor anxiety across the space.
Micron (MU): Down ~14.6% on Chinese Memory Threat
Micron (MU) shed approximately 14.6% on the week, kicked off by a 3.88% drop on October 13 after news emerged that Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) plans to launch a DDR5 RDIMM server module using a denser 4F² cell design by year-end. The threat is significant because CXMT is targeting conventional server DRAM — the segment where Micron earns its highest gross margins (up to 90% in its Core Data Center and Mobile units). TrendForce estimates CXMT already holds a 9.5% share of DRAM revenue as of Q2 2026. SK Hynix's US-listed shares (SKHY) fell 4.02% on October 13 on the same news; SanDisk (SNDK) also declined. The PHLX Semiconductor Index finished the week down 11.41% — its worst week since April 2025.
Broadcom (AVGO) and Nvidia (NVDA): Dragged Down by the Sector
Beyond the company-specific stories, Broadcom fell 9.07% and Nvidia dropped 6.61% for the week — both victims of the broader AI and semiconductor repricing rather than specific company news. Tesla (TSLA) fell 7.31%. At the more speculative end, data center-linked names IREN and CIFR lost well over 30% each on financing concerns similar to CoreWeave's.
What this means: The week's losers tell a coherent story: the AI infrastructure trade is being repriced around financing cost. When junk-rated AI bonds widen sharply while the rest of the high-yield market barely moves, it means credit markets are distinguishing between AI-infrastructure risk and general corporate risk — and charging a premium for it. The CXMT-driven memory selloff is a separate but related signal: Chinese competition is beginning to reach the highest-margin parts of the memory stack, not just commodity DRAM. Both themes will stay in focus heading into the October 28 Fed decision.
